Kath was born in Oundle Northants to Mary and Fred Rands in 1927, she was one of many children in the family. Sadly she lost her father at 11 years old and her mother at 14 years old, so lived with several family members until she was old enough to go on alone, but always stayed in close contact with her sister Evelyn.
